Did you know that you have more than 650 skeletal muscles in your body? Read on further to know about the common muscle pain causes and what to do about them.

Sometimes it can feel like every one of those 650 is aching.

If you’re suffering from muscle pain, it could be due to one of a wide number of causes. Some causes of muscle pain are much more common than others, however.

Read on as we take a look at some of the most common muscle pain causes.

1. Injury

A very common cause of sore muscles is injury.

We’ve all seen athletes pull up in the middle of a sprint, holding their legs in agony. This is due to a pulled or torn muscle, which is a very common cause of muscle pain.

These types of injuries usually occur due to fatigue or overuse of the muscle. If the muscle injury is not too severe it can usually be treated at home with anti-inflammatories and hot or cold compresses.

2. Flu

Did you know that about eight percent of Americans get flu each year?

Flu and other viral illnesses are another of the most common causes of muscle pain. The good news is that flu is usually treatable at home, and once the illness has passed, your muscle pain should also subside.

3. Exercise

Lockdown saw a huge increase in people exercising at home. Many of us started doing vigorous exercise for the first time in a long time.

Working out muscles that haven’t seen that much work for a while can lead to muscle pain. For example, after a workout, you may have felt some soreness in your glutes, shoulders, or hip flexors.

Exercise isn’t the only cause of hip flexor pain, however. It could also be down to one of these reasons.

4. Medications

Medications are also one of the most common causes of muscle pain.

Statins in particular are known to causes muscle pain as a side effect. Statins are a cholesterol-reducing medication that can help prevent the build-up of cholesterol in the arteries, and reduce the risk of heart problems.

Some people have no noticeable side effects with statins, but muscle pain is one of the most common.

5. Auto-Immune Diseases

Although most muscle is usually caused by something relatively harmless, muscle pain can also be a sign of a serious underlying medical condition.

Auto-immune conditions such as Lupus or Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can cause muscle pains. These diseases can be life-threatening, so it’s important to be aware of the causes of any muscle pain.

Finding Muscle Pain Causes

Working out muscle pain causes isn’t always easy, but it’s important that you try to do so.

Muscle pain may be a symptom of an underlying problem that is much more serious. Even if this isn’t the case, letting muscle pain continue without finding the problem could lead to muscle damage in the long run.
